Voyage Madagascar : What can we do to help?
What can we do to help?
We are regularly asked by travellers : "what can we do to help?"
The facts : Despite all their goodwill, Madagascan children will not succeed here, and they are our country’s future! Their day is split between helping their parents in the fields and school.
In the evening, the candle - or oil lamp for the most fortunate - is used economically for the essentials. Lights off after the frugal evening meal, just after the sun sets. It is impossible to read or do homework without using a candle, which remains a luxury.
The idea : Solar panels and lamps attached to the huts for each family. The lamps will be assembled in a workshop set up by Jacaranda, thus creating new jobs. The panels will be delivered “charged with sun” so that the lamps light from the moment that they are installed.
The application : the first solar panels are currently being installed (summer 2007) at the "Toiles de l’Isalo". The fulfilment : Travellers who want to will buy a "panel-lamp" kit and carry out its installation and some brief training in its use for the villagers, informed and prepared for their arrival.
